Danish Apple Squares
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 egg yolk, beaten
- 4-6 tablespoons milk
- These first five ingredients are for making the crusts.
- 10 medium apples; peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 egg white, beaten
- These five ingredients make up the filling.
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- These last three ingredients are the icing.
Instructions
- FOR CRUST, combine dry ingredients. Put yolk in 2/3 cup measure and add enough milk to fill. Cut shortening into dry ingredients and stir in milk mixture.
- Divide in half and roll to make crust for 10x15 inch jelly roll pan.
- FOR FILLING, put apples in crust. Combine sugar, cinnamon and cornstarch; sprinkle over apples. Put on top crust and brush with beaten egg white.
- Bake at 375F for 55 minutes.
- Combine icing ingredients and spread over bars while still warm.
Notes
The original recipe used tapioca instead of cornstarch.
