Sweet Rolls
Ingredients
- 2 packages yeast
- Dissolved with 1 teaspoon sugar in 2 cups warm water.
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup melted oleo
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 large egg
- 6 1/2 - 7 cups flour
- Above ingredients make the sweet dough.
- 1 Tablespoon butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 Tablespoon flour
- These four ingredients make up the filling.
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 Tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon butter
- These three ingredients make the frosting.
Instructions
- For dough, dissolve yeast with a teaspoon of sugar in two cups of warm water.
- Stir in half cup sugar, salt, oleo, and egg. Stir in flour to form dough.
- Place in bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and refrigerate overnight.
- Roll out into a large rectangle (about 12 by 32 inch).
- Brush dough with a tablespoon of melted butter.
- Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour for filling. Sprinkle evenly over the butter.
- Roll up from long-side to long-side. Cut into 30 one-inch rolls.
- Place rolls cut side up on a parchment paper lined sheet pan.
- Let rise about 45 minutes.
- Bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for thirty minutes.
- Combine powdered sugar, milk and butter to make a frosting. Frost after the rolls have cooled a bit or your frosting will just melt off.
Notes
To make handling easier, you could do two 12x16 inch rectangles and divide the filling ingredients between the two.
The recipe card I have has limited instructions on how to combine the dough and then refrigerate overnight. It then suggest using the dough for rolls or coffee cake baked at 350F for a half hour. Let me know if you have details I could add to the instructions.
The card also lists two alternative topping/fillings on the back:
- Alternative 1: 1/2 cup nuts, 1/4 cup sugar, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon (likely for making into a coffee cake).
- Alternative 2: 1 stick margarine and 1 cup sugar. Maybe this would be for old fashion butter rolls which play up buttery sweetness and sometimes have a touch of cinnamon and/or nutmeg added.
